Santa Muerte, please intercede on behalf of Aubrey (Shorty) Dameron. -Amen

Aubrey Dameron is a bubbly lady who vanished after leaving the house to meet someone. The last person to see her was her mother, who said she walked off into the dark morning. Dameron's case, classified as "endangered missing," is still open. Sadly, she is receiving little to no resources from authorities. As a result, the burden lies heavily on some of her family to find answers on their own.

Timeline Of Events

August 18, 2018 (Estimated)

Dameron was living or on a trip with her boyfriend, Jay C. Pierson, in New Mexico. Then Dameron returned to live with her family in Grove, Oklahoma. Pierson moved to Colorado around this time.

Pierson explained that Dameron moved home to treat her alleged drug and alcohol use. However, Pat Smith (Aunt) reports that Dameron was afraid of Pierson, and he threatened her life if she tried to leave him.

Smith and Christian Fencer (Uncle) both mention they thought Dameron moving home was a wrong choice. Jen Byrd (Mother and whose name might also be Jennifer or Alice), Unknown Name (Stepfather), and Tommy, Unknown last name (Brother), all lived in the family home. The three family members all allegedly suffered from methamphetamine use disorder.

Dameron was not reaching out to her family as much, and it was unusual for her to do that.

"Instead of hearing from her every day or every other day, it come to be every few weeks," he said. "It was just it was very strange."

Dameron was reported to have spoken with her mother almost daily, even in New Mexico.

March 3, 2019, 3:30 AM

Dameron was last seen in the gravel driveway of her single-level family home by her mother. Dameron had told her family, including her brother, that she was meeting a friend and left the house on foot. Byrd (Mother), Stepfather, and Tommy (Brother) were all home residents that morning.

The home is on the outskirts of Grove, Oklahoma, on east 280, which is about 7,000 miles from the Missouri Stateline.

The Charlie Project lists the home as "Off Of 280 Road" https://charleyproject.org/case/aubrey-dameron

Ktul.com lists the home as "east 280) https://ktul.com/news/investigations/hundreds-of-indigenous-women-either-missing-or-murdered-in-oklahoma

It is a rural setting, and the Grove only had a population of around 7,000 without much diversity. They were not near any place within walking distance, which was significant.

Dameron's mother described her daughter's outfit the last time she had seen her. "Told me she was wearing a black jacket, black skirt, black and black netting hose." Later the description includes that Dameron wore all black, a black leather jacket, and her black boots had heels.

According to her family, records show that Dameron had Facebook messaged several people asking for a ride before she had left. It is not clear if anyone responded and picked her up. Another source also mentions this, which states that the information comes from the missing person's report.

Dameron is officially reported missing to Delaware County Sheriff's Office. Dameron had not returned cellphone calls or returned home.

The girlfriend of Dameron's brother allegedly filed this report. https://www.oxygen.com/crime-news/case-of-aubrey-dameron-missing-transgender-woman-highlights-dangers-to-indigenous

Some sources report it was Byrd that filed the missing person report. https://whatthemurder.wordpress.com/2020/09/20/missing-and-murdered-indigenous-women-and-girls/

March 12, 2019

Deanette Lynn Rowbotham (40) of Jay, who claimed to be Dameron's friend, called Dameron's ex-boyfriend who had moved to Grand Junction, Colorado.

Rowbotham told the ex-boyfriend that Dameron was being held in Ketchum, Oklahoma, for a drug money debt. Rowbotham asked for money to release Dameron. "if they don't get the money they're gonna take him [her] for a ride," the affidavit states.

Rowbotham offered to include some of her own money to help save Dameron.

*Dameron's once close friend seems to ignore her gender and uses the wrong pronoun. Also, Rowbotham's photo is attached to the profile for Dameron on the Charleyproject.org

It is unclear who tipped the authorities off first about Rowbotham's claims. It was either Dameron's family or ex-boyfriend who turned the information over.

https://web.archive.org/web/20201125163834/https://www.grandlakenews.com/news/20190517/new-leads-arrest-made-in-disappearance-of-grove-woman

Authorities found that Rowbotham was lying, and she was charged with extortion by Delaware County District Court. Rowbotham had been freed on a personal recognizance bond but with orders to return to court in June.

"At one time she was a close friend," said Delaware County Sheriff's Capt. Gayle Wells refers to Dameron and Rowbotham.

Rowbotham went on to tell D.C.S.O. in an affidavit that Wells filed that she did not think Dameron was missing.

"trying to do whatever to get her man back," and she "really thought Aubrey's parents knew where she was," the affidavit states.

Rowbotham also told investigators that Dameron had no contact with friends or family for five days in December because she and Roawbatham were together.

March 16th- 18th, 2019 (Estimated)

Smith and Fencer were not informed of Dameron's disappearance until around one week after her missing official report. They both felt a slow communication, and it was suspicious how long it took to report her missing.

"The way we found out was a friend of mine had messaged me on social media and asked me if she was missing," said Smith.

Smith had to call the D.C.S.O. to confirm the disappearance herself. After confirmation, authorities insisted she calls Byrd for details.

Smith noticed different details and stories about the disappearance.

Fencer and Smith wonder if their own family had any involvement.

"I want to say no, and believe in the no," Fencer said. "I can't say that without giving [Byrd's information] the benefit of doubt."

https://web.archive.org/web/20201125163834/https://www.grandlakenews.com/news/20190517/new-leads-arrest-made-in-disappearance-of-grove-woman

Fencer went and visited the family home around this timeframe. Dameron's personal belongings are packed up. Byrd tells him Dameron had done it when looking for a nail polish bottle.

https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/news/search-for-cherokee-nation-citizen-aubrey-dameron-continues-2-years-later/article_e9d6a74c-14b7-11ec-aba8-93f2ad79b059.html

https://brenmar71.medium.com/where-is-aubrey-dameron-61eec4709a3

Smith worried because Dameron had epilepsy, and she had left behind her life-saving medications, her purse, and even her cell phone.

Dameron's family did not receive the full support from the authorities they deserved.

"It just seemed like no one cared," she said, adding that they felt the authorities blamed Aubrey's "high-risk lifestyle" for her disappearance."

https://www.nbcnews.com/dateline/aunt-missing-native-american-transgender-woman-aubrey-dameron-believes-she-n1278575

Smith then calls the sheriff directly after being concerned about the inconsistent details of the case. The Sherrif was on that day just then being briefed on the case. One week after the report was taken. https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/news/search-for-cherokee-nation-citizen-aubrey-dameron-continues-2-years-later/article_e9d6a74c-14b7-11ec-aba8-93f2ad79b059.html

The family then dispersed missing person flyers all over Grove.

Acts of hate from locals continued after Dameron was gone. Local people ripped down missing person flyers and posted slurs on her social media pages.

At the family silent auction to help raise funds for the searches, very few showed up, and those that did wanted to gossip.

According to a Grove Sun article republished on Facebook under the missing page with the article title "Developing. DelCo Sheriff's Office looking for missing Grove woman." Dameron had been sighted at a casino.

"He is following up with the staff at Quapaw Casino, specifically, to determine if a possible sighting of Dameron on Saturday, March 16 was accurate.

That tip, Wells said, included Dameron with a heavy set, Native American man with long dark hair."

March 19, 2019

Smith calls D.C.S.O. again and speaks with Wells. Wells tells Smith that Dameron is not a missing person because of her lifestyle.

Later in an interview with Oxygen.com, Wells said he kept the 100-page report of the case within reach of him. Wells explains that the case is hard because of her lifestyle, and Dameron was sexually active and a known drug abuser.

Wells reports they made over 100 follow-up contacts in the case.

According to a Grove Sun article republished on Facebook under the missing page with the article title "Developing. DelCo Sheriff's Office looking for missing Grove woman." Dameron's phone had been pinged at this point, but it received no responses.

"Detective Brandon Houston said law enforcement is working with surveillance teams at area casinos to examine the footage."

The first search was conducted near the family home with a team of around 30 people. The team was friends, family, strangers, and the Oklahoma City Metro Search and Rescue Team led by Brain Smith. Local law enforcement did not participate. They did not believe there was evidence pointing to Dameron being in those areas.

According to a Grove Sun article republished on Facebook under the missing page with the article title "Developing. DelCo Sheriff's Office looking for missing Grove woman."

According to Smith, a bloody sock was found half a mile east away from the family home. It did not seem to have anything else on the sock except the possible blood. Delaware County Sheriff's Office picked it up and submitted it to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, but no conclusive results have been received about this sock.

Wells gives a quote to MTV.com

"Because of her high-risk lifestyle, there [are] lots of possibilities about what happened or where she is,"

Wells pointed to her gender identity and history of drug use.

"So, I mean, with [the] worst-case scenario in mind, they've searched lots of places."

November 1- 21st, 2019

The family gets help through their social media. For example, crossroads K9 S.A.R. in Louisiana helped them search with dogs at the family home. This search time also included volunteers and law enforcement officers.

All four specially trained dogs hit a cadaver scent on a tarp in the shed in the backyard. D.C.S.O. sent the tarp in December to a lab in Cherokee county.

Neither the family nor Sherrif heard back about the results. https://nondoc.com/2020/03/20/bills-to-address-murdered-missing-indigenous-women/

They also hit on a scent nearby at the pond on private property off 280 roads.

November 21, 2019

Authorities go back to the pond and search it, but very little is found. Wells says an old flashlight, an old fishing reel, and a plastic bag. They placed lines vertically and horizontally in the water and used divers and rakes.

Authorities appealed to the public again for leads saying their leads are exhausted now.

"Aubrey's Alert" was renamed "Kasey Alert" Kasey is another Cherokee native. Dameron's family speculated that the change was due to Dameron's transgender identity.

"Today, we received word that the Aubrey Alert will need a name change before it can move forward from the open session. Due to Aubrey being transgender in a red state, multiple ELECTED OFFICIALS have stated they will not support the bill due to it being named after Aubrey Dameron. We are deeply saddened by this update but will continue to search for Aubrey and raised awareness when we are given the opportunity. Wado!"

"This was the last case I ever reviewed. I kept it in my office, within reach," he said. "What made this case unique was her lifestyle. Not only was she transgender and very sexually active, but she was also a known drug abuser."

Aubrey Dameron

Dameron has been deadnamed several times without justification for using her old name. Dameron does not seem to use her deadname after the transition.

Dameron was born October 22, 1993, and is a Cherokee Nation citizen. Dameron was 25 years old when she went missing.

https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/news/search-for-cherokee-nation-citizen-aubrey-dameron-continues-2-years-later/article_e9d6a74c-14b7-11ec-aba8-93f2ad79b059.html

(Traditionally, discussing the details around transitioning is considered rude. However, this has been a focal point in Dameron's case, and the details could be essential to solving her case. In addition, Dameron herself has been public about her transition.)

Dameron was a two-spirit and began her transition sometime in junior high or high school. Dameron attended Grove High from 2009-2012, according to her Facebook.

Dameron said she was 14, maybe when she started her journey into coming out as different. She had known who she was since she was a little kid but did not know the labels or terms. https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

The first person Dameron came out to was her Grandmother, who accepted her but had old-fashioned ideas about relationships and love. Then she came out to the rest of the family, but it was hard. "They took it pretty hard, and I felt like I was all alone." https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

Unfortunately, this strained her relationship with her father as he started to distance himself from Dameron when she first came out as gay and then later two-spirit. https://brenmar71.medium.com/where-is-aubrey-dameron-61eec4709a3

Dameron's father went outside to cry and came back thirty minutes later and said, " You're my kid, and always love you; you're still alive that's what matters."https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

Dameron also had a problematic relationship with her mother, Jennifer Byrd, also known as Jen Byrd, or possibly Alice. The relationship slowly evolved over the years to the point where they talked often. https://www.air.tv/watch?v=5qT2dYOeSMKuuOBd93Agxw

(Interview with Dameron's Mother) https://www.newsnationnow.com/missing/missing-indigenous-transgender-woman-last-seen-in-2019-2/?utm_campaign=socialflow&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral&fbclid=IwAR0MvOIWW9Vou-1XA7ra27K5s69weDtAMflpJx4vc0K8nJwlCFpkXO_l1Uo

"My mother and I, it was kind of very hard for us." Dameron describes how the process of her mother's acceptance took a few years and counseling, but "now she loves me as her daughter, and she wouldn't have me any other way." https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

Dameron had strong relationships with her Aunt Pat Smith and Uncle Christian Fencer. https://brenmar71.medium.com/where-is-aubrey-dameron-61eec4709a3

Fencer is gay and only six months apart in age from Dameron. The two shared a close bond and often shared similar life experiences.

https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/news/search-for-cherokee-nation-citizen-aubrey-dameron-continues-2-years-later/article_e9d6a74c-14b7-11ec-aba8-93f2ad79b059.html

https://www.kjrh.com/news/local-news/forgotten-faces-where-is-aubrey-dameron

Pat Smith has children not much older than Fencer and Dameron, so it seems Smith had taken on a motherly role to the two. Smith shared fond memories of Dameron and the family in the car singing.

https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/news/search-for-cherokee-nation-citizen-aubrey-dameron-continues-2-years-later/article_e9d6a74c-14b7-11ec-aba8-93f2ad79b059.html

Dameron has a brother, Tommy, and numerous cousins with whom she took photos. Sometimes she would pose all the younger kids and help them smile for the camera. Dameron lists several people as her siblings, but they may have been chosen family, and it is not confirmed if the listed people are relatives by blood. -Dameron's F.B.

Unfortunately, Dameron's two-spirited nature made her the target of cruel kids and adults who bullied her for it. Christian Fencer, Dameron's Uncle, was also bullied along with her. Fencer describes children as calling them slurs, chasing them, and throwing rocks.https://brenmar71.medium.com/where-is-aubrey-dameron-61eec4709a3

It would be easy for anyone else to fight their bullies back, but Dameron was so kind and loving that her response was to pray for them.

Praying did not stop them from forcing her into an alternative school because her transition "was a distraction" to her classmates.

https://www.oxygen.com/crime-news/case-of-aubrey-dameron-missing-transgender-woman-highlights-dangers-to-indigenous

Dameron describes coming out publicly and how some people did not believe she was born with a soul of women. She decided to be public in the first place because she wanted to find a soul mate and that soul mate to see her for what she had within her. The school employees and some students would harass and threaten her if she did not comply with their ideals. Eventually, she gave up her library school job because they would not let her be herself.   https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

The church was similar; she describes being chased out by several boys with a crowbar and 2x4 board because she was not allowed to be who she was at church. Dameron did not stop going to church, and she continued to go to that church for five more years. https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

According to a Grove Sun article republished on Facebook under the missing page with the article title "Developing. DelCo Sheriff's Office looking for missing Grove woman." Fencer stated that in the past, Dameron had "attended youth ministries in Grove, including one at Cornerstone Church." (It is unclear if this is the church Dameron was bullied at. Please do not send hate or allegations to this church)

Every step of Dameron's transition had to be worked for, even down to the proper medications she needed, but it was worth it to be herself! https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

Dameron enjoyed living authentically and encouraged others to be themselves as well. One family member reported that she loved celebrating and attending PRIDE events. https://www.out.com/news/2019/6/07/family-missing-indigenous-trans-woman-wont-stop-searching

On her Facebook lives, Dameron reaches out to others going through similar things and offers comfort.

When Dameron disappeared, her body was not fully transitioned. This made her family wonder if this was why she went missing. Perhaps a hate crime. Dameron mentioned briefly during Facebook lives how she worried her body might cause difficulties in her search for love but knew that whomever she fell in love with loved her for what she already had to give and whatever else she might have to give later. https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

One of the reasons Dameron wanted to be public about her transition was because of love. She was interested in old-fashioned men with Christian ideals that could see the beautiful woman that she was. https://www.facebook.com/AubreyACDC123/videos/10208744583466298

Dameron believed in an all-loving God and was dedicated to Christianity. . "call me imaginative, but I suppose you could say I have strong Faith in my Savior!" -Dameron's F.B. descriptions.

Rumors swirled that Dameron perhaps had suicidal ideals when she disappeared, but her family quickly stopped the rumors by pointing out how untrue it wasAccording to a Grove Sun article republished on Facebook under the missing page with the article title "Developing. DelCo Sheriff's Office looking for missing Grove woman."

"She would not harm herself," Fencer said. "She is very strong in every sense of the word. She is always lifting people up."

Dameron has had several jobs working in Highschool as well. Clothes and More 2011, Izonu as maintenance April 2011, and McDonald's in the Grove May '09 - Jan 2010. -Dameron's Facebook

Dameron extended her education at Grove Beauty College on February 27, 2014-15, and NEO A&M on August 17, 2012-13, for nursing and possibly teaching. - Dameron's Facebook

According to a Grove Sun article republished on Facebook under the missing page with the article title "Developing. DelCo Sheriff's Office looking for missing Grove woman." Fencer said the McDonald job was more recent and confirmed that Dameron was a trained beautician from Grove Beauty College.

Dameron lists the places she has lived as Colcord, Oklahoma, Vinita, Oklahoma (moved 2005), Noel, Missouri (moved 2003 and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Dameron also has several checked-in locations around Oklahoma and some of Missouri- Dameron's Facebook.

Dameron had epilepsy and relied on medications for them and other health concerns for which she needed medications.

Dameron was a tall woman, sometimes described as 5'10 or six-foot-tall, and she weighed between 150-170lbs with an overall slim build.

The word "Shorty" and circle design on her upper left arm at the shoulder. Lastly, two small swirly designed tattoos on each hip. https://charleyproject.org/case/aubrey-dameron

Dameron has a bubbly positive, and compassionate personality. Often she would welcome the outcast and try to know them.

Dameron also dreamed of being a singer and performer, but acting classes had to be set aside because of poverty. Instead, she would enjoy music and youtube videos about these topics.

However, leading up to her disappearance, Dameron was not reaching out as much.

"It was just it was very strange." - Fencer https://www.cherokeephoenix.org/news/search-for-cherokee-nation-citizen-aubrey-dameron-continues-2-years-later/article_e9d6a74c-14b7-11ec-aba8-93f2ad79b059.html
