Tracy Thompson Told Us Who Murdered Her ln Dalton, Georgia 1999

Content Warning: Problematic language and violence about transgender people and LGBTQ+ people.

Tracy Thompson was murdered at the age of 33 years old. She told law enforcement her boyfriend had killed her on her death bed. Then she died of her injuries at the hospital. Thompson's alleged boyfriend was nowhere nearby at the time of the attack. The case remains unsolved.

(Only Photo I could find of Thompson)

Timeline of Events

March 19th, 1999 (Estimated) Tracy Thompson was in the Dalton, Georgia, area.

March 30th, 1999 (Tuesday)(Before Dawn) The high was 69, and the low was 40 with fair weather conditions. Sunrises at 6:31 AM and sets at 7:01 PM. Tracy Thompson is attacked with a baseball bat on a wooded dirt road at a crossroads. It was in a rural area of Wilcox County, Georgia. The area was north of Seville, 10 miles east of Cordele. It was also about 10 miles from the interstate.

Thompson suffered at minimum seven blows to the head. According to GBI Agent Lee Weathersby, a broken baseball bat was on the scene. However, it was only a sliver of one. The other clues were tire tracks and blood.

Thompson was wearing jeans and a pink-flowered shirt.

(4:30 AM) Thompson walks to the farm home of Joel and Cindy Brown a quarter of a mile from the crime scene. Thompson had followed the dirt road. There she knocks on the door, asking for help. Thompson was injured and needed medical attention, bleeding from the head. Thompson asked for water, a blanket, and rest. Thompson told them she had been beaten with a baseball bat. The residents called for help.

Thompson was transported to  Pheobe-Putney Memorial hospital in Albany. There she spoke with nurses and a GBI. Investigator before brain swelling began. Thompson claimed the person who killed her was an ex-boyfriend.

"Thompson said before [she] died that [her] boyfriend beat [her] up," Rothwell said. What we're trying to do is determine what[she] means by boyfriend and who the boyfriend is."

Thompson died of her wounds only ten hours after her hospital arrival. The passing happened sometime in the afternoon.

April 01st, 1999 (Thursday) Off-duty State Patrol finds the baseball bat handle. It was in a ditch about a mile away from the crime scene.

April 02nd, (Friday) 1999 Investigators attempt to find Thompson's boyfriend. They find three matching names, all from Georgia, all truck drivers, all with alibis. One of them was out of town at the time and was ruled out.

"I would look at that [she] traveled with someone from north Georgia to here. Who was that person? And we've not discovered who that is yet," - GBI. Agent Lee Weathersby (41nbc.com "Middle Georgia Cold Cases Murder Of The Transgender Traveler")

Investigators also looked into a lead who had made threats. They also had a history of hate against the LGBTQ+ community. No link was determined.

Early into the investigation, it was theorized that the murder was a hate crime. Someone picked Thompson up and killed her when they realized she was transgender. This idea lost traction over time, and they do not know if her death had anything to do with being transgender.

Lastly, they investigated Thompson's prison cellmate. This person denied even knowing Thompson, but this person was ruled out.

April 04th, 1999 Investigators asked the public for help solving the case.

2009 All Physical evidence was re-evaluated with new DNA technology. Witnesses have been reinterviewed.

August 12th, 2015 The investigation does not stop, and it is reviewed quarterly.

"Even to this day when we go back and look at the case, we go back and look at the beginning, what was done then, what needs to be done now. We still have a couple of leads we're following up, but in any unsolved case, the longer they go unsolved, the harder it gets." November 07th, 2017

GBI Special agent Lee Weathersby said the evidence had been tested multiple times. It has been tested with new technology. There is still no suspect.

Tracy Thompson

Tracy Thompson was born February 07th, 1966, and murdered March 29/30th 1999, at thirty-three years old, inturned at West Hill Cemetery in Dalton, Whitfield, County, Georgia, the USA, where Thompson was local.

Thompson enjoyed traveling and did not stay in one area long. Thompson may have an Aunt and Uncle in Florida. Thompson would stay in Florida around six months to a year before hitchhiking back to Georgia. Thompson did frequently hitchhike to Crisp, Wilcox Counties, or Floridas. Thompson was known to hitchhike the interstate (Mainly I-75) and stay at truck stops. Thompson had lived in Miami, Ft. Meyers, and Florida.

They have not been able to locate anyone traveling with her at the time, and she was not in contact with family or friends at the time of her murder.

Thompson was unemployed at the time of her murder. Additionally, Thompson was a high-risk victim because of her transient lifestyle.

Deadnamed (Content Warning: Discussion of hate against Transgender people)

"Deadnaming" is a slang term used by transgender and LGBTQ+ communities. Deadnaming is when a name not in use by the person is published or released. It is disrespectful, and it can also slow down an investigation. People might know the victim only as the pronoun or name they use in their daily lives. If you would like to read more about this, check out this article by ProPublica: https://www.propublica.org/article/deadnamed-transgender-black-women-murders-jacksonville-police-investigation

Thompson was deadnamed, misgendered, and her personal criminal history was released to the public. They also described her with the antiqued word "transvestite, " which shows people's seeds of hate. An example would be the local news reporting a quote from a local person. "They say he was wearing a dress," retiree Fred King told the Associated Press. "Most people in this area would say, "hell, he needed killing.'"

Sharing this information now is done solely with the intent that it might solve Thompson's murder. Unfortunately, this case has very few leads, tips, or info; thus, releasing this info as respectfully as possible is necessary. Thompson's name was Tracy Thompson, and her deadname was Billy Joe Turner. When Thompson was in Dalton, Georgia, she would sometimes use Tracey Turner. Between Georgia and Florida, Thomson had 50 arrests for non-violent petty crimes. In addition, Thompson served time in prison for theft.

Transgender activists in California declared a state of emergency and national crisis because Thompson was the fifth publicly reported murder of a transgender person. They tried to raise the alarm for the growing epidemic. With good reason as the trend has continued to rise over the years.

Murders in that area were already rare but unsolved murders even rarer, according to Mike Martin. Martin is the Former Wilcox County Sheriff and was a deputy at Thompson's murder.

A second murder case with the same name happened in 2005, but they are not connected.

Was Thompson a victim of Samual Little?
