This unidentified person is known as Edmonton John Doe of 1999

July 18, 1999, 11:00 PM (Sunday)

Firefighters discovered Edmonton in a burnt-out garage after an emergency call was made for 108A Avenue and 97th Street in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The firefighters had just put the fire out and were looking for hotspots.

The fire had been called to 911 by Charlene Pancel and her friends. They smelled smoke and called. The flames, according to Pancel, were so big they were shooting out of the garage and across the ally.

The damages from the fire cost 10,000 and got to a nearby vehicle and utility lines. The garage owner was not in Canada during the fire. However, Edmonton was in the garage and recovered by firefighters from the back corner. They thought he was transient and starting a fire to warm up.

Edmonton was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death and identity.

September 9, 1999

A facial recognition sketch is released. It is remarked as unusual for the area as, before this case, they had only done this once for a river drowning victim.

Missing person reports were checked in the Edmonton area and elsewhere.

August 17, 2000

Edmonton still lies in the morgue. The paper cites that the police have no leads and discuss that he might be buried in an unmarked grave. They also note that the fire wasn't started by arson. Instead, they believed it began with a cigarette or a cooking fire. The picture released brought in twenty tips as far away as Halifax and Thunderbay. One lead seemed very strong, but then it fell through. After that, each tip was ruled out.
